A Forever Kind Of Dream

When my first book got published in December 2015, one of the things i sought out for was book reviews. Not a review from the New York Times (who am i kidding, that would have been fantastic!) or people magazine (Hey Boo)  but reviews from people across the world who bought and read  "A forever kind of Dream".

So far there has not being a single negative review and the general consensus seems to be everyone really likes it. From the reviews on amazon to the messages I've gotten on Facebook and Instagram, it's been a burst of positivity.

Not to undermine every other review but i just received my most favorite so far on whatsapp this morning from a facebook friend who got the book back in May. What makes this review great asides the fact i wasn't expecting it is its unbridledness and the joie de vivre feeling it evokes . Thank you Ekene.

Here it goes:

Love. Forever. Sunshine. Laughter. Dreams.

These are the words that flood my mind every time I think about your book. When I  first read ‘art of hearts’ on Facebook, I knew I’d struck golden poetry from a mind that just wants to live, love, breathe. 61 poems later, I can boldly say that a certain part of me has changed, sort of. There’s this new willingness to love myself more, smile more, drink more beer (I used to be a teetotaller), and sing my heart out every time I sense a dark cloud hovering.

Your poems all seem to smirk at conformity; there are no efforts made to rhyme, or fall into a particular form or meter. Your words drip effortlessly, sweet as honey, and your poems end up soft to the ears, like music, almost like they’ve got minds of their own . I think they mirror the soul of the poet and all he wants to be : free, happy, loving. The poem, bubblysunnylovejoymiracle, is such a delight!
"...autocorrect keeps trying to correct me/ Google keeps saying those words don’t exist/ but I think God understands me/ when I pray and thank him for / the bubblysunnylovejoymiracle / that you are. "
It feels to me like you’re saying , “the rest of the earth cannot understand me, but my heart is sure, and true, and one with God, when I say I love you.”

I like the way you keep your words simple. Some poems are brief, like ‘iris’ and ‘universe’ but these two poems ask the deepest questions! Some, like , ‘don’t forget to remember me,’ are long, but when you read them, you lose yourself within, and when you get to the last line, you yearn for even more. Some poems tickled me, like ‘MADE IN CHINA.’ Some poems shocked me, like ‘watermelon dawn.’ That one left a sheepish smile on my face at the end. Some poems made me think hard, like ‘home’ and ‘life.’ While some got my ?!*^ snooping around; forgive me for the parts of you I’m yet to kiss.

‘art of hearts’ has always been my favourite, but there are three poems, Ifeanyi , that when I read them, my heart glows like a firefly. These poems are like magic to me: the prayer of wild mountain flowers ,black unicorn, and eclipse of the  heart. Words won’t do justice if I try to explain how these poems made, and still make me feel. Maybe someday , if we meet, I’ll try to explain.

I love your poetry, Ifeanyi, and I will shamelessly say that after reading them, I fell in love with your soul even more. I would read these poems over and over again, because they pierce me deep, they seem to know where I hurt inside, they give me hope, they give me peace. If someday we meet, I owe you a bottle of a very fine bottle of wine, and a waaaaarm hug. Thank you for writing this book, and I can’t wait to read more of your poems. Cheers!
